Registration for Youth Group and/or Confirmation is available three different times:

* Monday, September 14 from 4pm-7pm in the parish hall,
* after each mass on Sunday Sept 20, and
* before our first youth group meeting on Monday, September 21 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm in the parish hall.

To register parents will:

Complete a registration form
Complete an emergency form including emergency medical information
Complete a photo/media release
Sign up to contribute to SAYG once during the year (time, talent, or treasure!)
Pay registration fees ($25 for SAYG only or $150 for Confirmation Years 1 or 2)
Receive a calendar of events
Receive information about confirmation requirements

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The film dramatizes Jesus' entry in Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate, and his ultimate crucifixion. Based on the Broadway Musical, the film of Jesus Christ Superstar was released in 1973, and was the eighth highest-grossing film of that year. The film, directed by Norman Jewison, was shot in Israel and other Middle Eastern locations. Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson were both nominated for 1974 Golden Globe Awards for their portrayals of Jesus and Judas. Bob Bingham reprised the role of Caiaphas, having played the part in the original Broadway production. Barry Dennen (Pontius Pilate) and Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene) were the only performers who remained from both the original recording and Broadway cast.

A musical based on the Gospel according to Matthew. A “modern-day” version of the gospels, opening with John the Baptist calling a disparate group of young New Yorkers from their workaday lives to follow and learn from Jesus. Movie Night March 11!

All SAYG Youth should be on-hand at 6:00pm to set up for the first of 3 movie nights we are hosting for the parish during Lent about the life of Jesus.

We will be showing The Miracle Maker starting at 6:30pm. You will be running a snack bar in the kitchen during the movie. Please invite your families and friends to come!

Description of the Movie:
This is a great production, which is far superior to any of the 'epic' real life re-tellings of the life of Jesus. If you look at the list of theological advisors in the credits at the end of the film you will see part of the reason why - rather than a dramatic Hollywood interpretation of the story, this work is part based on the thoughts of people who have spent a lifetime reflecting on what Jesus meant. The puppets and animation mean that the sets and the actors don’t distract the audience.

Imagine a world without electricity or running water. Imagine growing up in a town with no school, no hospital, no doctors. Such was the backdrop for the amazing story of Wiaga, Ghana, native Thomas Awiapo, a recipient of Catholic Relief Services’ aid.

Now serving as a senior program officer for CRS Ghana, the organization that helped him many years ago, Awiapo shares his story with those who have not struggled in the same ways he did.

Family Meeting on Wednesday!

This week we have a very special meeting. The whole family is invited to learn about God, the Son. We will also celebrate December birthdays!

This is a Generations of Faith Session which means there will be small groups for parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousins.

We will begin in the hall by sharing a meal, followed by separate sessions for different age groups, including adults.
PLEASE BRING SOMETHING TO SHARE (2L of soda, chips, cookies, pick up a pizza from Costco or Little Ceasars, a bucket of chicken, some double cheeseburgers from McDonalds! SOMETHING so we can share with everyone. If everyone brings a little, there will be a LOT!

LA CONGRESS PEOPLE: Your $50 Deposit is due at this meeting. If brining a check, it should be made out to St. Athanasius Parish.

What is your plan for saving/earning the money required to attend?
What are some ways you might bring your experience home to the SAYG (St. Athanasius Youth Group)?
Do your parents support your participation? If not, or if you don't know, how do you plan to gain their permission to attend?
What is your plan for missed classes/tests/assignments?
Have you looked at the booklet or website and if so, what appeals to you? Which sessions look interesting?

The more prepared you are with your responses, the more seriously your interest will be taken.
There will be no penalty if you reschedule your appointment due to a conflict and you contact Alicia ahead of time.
Missed appointments or lack of preparedness indicate that you are probably not ready to take on the privilege and responsibility required for participation!

Camping Trip Success!

16 SAYG Youth went camping in Half Moon Bay. Thank you to our parent drivers, to Fr. Stasys, and to Alicia's friends for providing firewood and cooking and guarding the hershey bars. Most of all thank you to the 16 teens who made the trip fun and entertaining for everyone!

Yay Laser Tag!

The SAYG had a great time last Friday at Laser Quest in Mt. View. We will be going on a camping trip next. Check below for more details!

If you are joining us for the Half Moon Bay Camping Trip, please remember the following:

1) We are meeting in the church parking lot at noon. Alicia and Fr. Stasys are your chaperones.
2) Eat lunch before you come...we won't be grilling until 5 or 6pm.
3) Make sure you have a complete, signed permission slip and $20.
4) Make sure you have the following basics for your comfort: (it really is COLD in HMB)
5) Remind your friends! Help each other out, especially if you know they don't check email!

RULES:

We are all here for fun and fellowship. Be kind, friendly and courteous to each other and to your chaperones.
When leaving the campground you must be with at least one other person. No boy-girl couples--you must go in a group of 3 or more.
There will be set campground check-in times. You MUST be present and on time or we will search for you.
Curfew is at sunset. No leaving the campground after dark. Lights out/quiet time at midnight.
Boys and girls will be set up on opposite sides of the campground. No members of the opposite sex in any tent at any time.
Use/possession of alcohol, drugs, or any behavior that endangers the safety of others will result in your parents being contacted immediately to take you home any time of day or night.
Always ask permission! If you aren't sure if you should do something, you probably shouldn't.

Sunblock and Lip Balm (chap-stick)
Toothbrush/toothpaste

I will have 2 bicycles you can borrow. I have a bike rack for 2 on my car if you want to bring your own. HELMETS WILL BE REQUIRED. I have two you can borrow or bring your own.

LASER TAG!

Location: Laser Quest Mountain View, Shoreline Blvd
Description: Laser Quest combines the classic games of tag and hide & seek with a high-tech twist. With the most sophisticated laser tag equipment available, the game is played in a large, multi-level arena featuring specialty lighting, swirling fog and heart-pounding music.

• Cost: $18 includes 2 games and Pizza and Soda
• Complete the enclosed permission slip and arrive at Laser Quest by 8:15.
• Game 1 Begins at 8:30pm
• Game 2 Begins at 9:20
• Private Party Room from 9:40-10:40pm—we will eat pizza and organize the camping trip and disucss upcoming youth group fun at this time!

CAMPING IN HALF MOON BAY!

An overnighter steps away from the beach along the California Coastal Trail in a secluded grove of Cypress trees. Play on the beach, hike the bluffs, bike down the coast, grill out, roast marshmallows by the bonfire.

• Cost: $20/person
• Depart Mt. View 12:30pm Tuesday. Break camp at 11:00am the next day.
• Where: Sweetwood Camp along the Pacific Coast Highway

In order to participate in the camping trip, everyone has to share resources! We will need the following items for the camping trip. Each person will need to bring their own sleeping bag/pillow. We will also need everyone to sign up to provide something on this list.
• Tents
• Firewood
• Graham Crackers
• Marshmallows
• Hershey Bars
• Parents who can drive a carload of people to and/or from the campsite.
• Charcoal for the BBQ
• Paper Plates
• Baby Wipes
• Plastic knives/forks/spoons
• Water
• Snacks (chips/cookies/etc)

If you want to go camping, please look carefully at this list and see what you can bring Tents and Drivers are the most needed items!!!
• If your parent can drive: We will need to know how many people you can fit in your car (not including you and the driver)
• If you have a tent we can use we need to know how many people will fit in it!
You can either call/text/email Alicia by FRIDAY AUGUST 1 telling her you can come and what you can bring to the trip OR come to Laser Tag and tell me during our Private Party Room Time.

Thank you to everyone who showed up to the parish Seder meal last Wednesday.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 2, as part of the Generations of Faith program. Meet in the parish hall at 6:00pm!

I was EXTREMELY proud of how everyone pitched in, followed directions and did a fantastic job serving the people of the parish at the Seder.
You served the Lord well. Thank you too for being so welcoming to my mom! She was so impressed with everyone, she's been talking about you for days!

I hope you all have a blessed Easter weekend. See you at the Easter Vigil on Saturday night, if you are going to be there.

Next Youth Group Event: Seder Meal

All High School Youth being confirmed are required to help serve at the parish Seder Meal on Wednesday, Marh 19, 2008. Please arrive at 5:00pm and plan to stay until 9:00pm. You will get to eat dinner, too!

YOUTH TRIP to LA CONGRESS

February 27-March 1 four youth and 2 adults journeyed to Anaheim to experience the Youth Day that is part of the Los Angeles Religious Education Conference. O ver 16,000 Catholic Youth from all around the country attended, celebrated, and worshiped together. We stayed in a beautiful log cabin in the Angeles National Forest and commuted into Anaheim each day. These photos show some of the highlights of the trip.

The one picture we didn't take was Saturday night when Fr. John Fitzpatrick took us all out to dinner with Loretta and her husband. Each youth had a chance to share their thoughts and experience of Youth Day as well as talk about their future goals and plans. Thank you Fr. John for such a wonderful evening!

It was a fact-finding mission to find out if this would be a worthwhile trip to take next year since its not cheap, requires kids to take 2 days off from school, and is a long drive, but we all agreed, that it was most definitely, 100% worth it! This weekend, 13 students will participate in the FaithFull Retreat at Redwood Glenn camp. Over 100 youth from around the diocese will participate in the retreat this weekend.

Parents must arrange transportation to arrive at the camp at 8:45 am Saturday, Nov 4. The retreat will end Sunday at 4:00pm. Parents should arrange for pickup. The camp is located at 3100 Bean Creek Rd
Scotts Valley, CA 95066

Directions From Mountain View:
Take 85 South to HWY 17 South towards Santa Cruz. Exit on Granite Creek Road and Scotts Valley Drive. Go straight through the first light onto Glenwood Drive. Go about 2 miles and turn left on Bean Creek Road. Please plan for the trip to take about an hour. Students need to arrive at 8:45am on Saturday, November 3 and will need to be picked up at 4:00pm on Sunday, November 4.

Some people think the church is exclusively the domain of priests, nuns, bishops, and the pope. Maybe you believe that as well. Although deep inside you may feel an attraction to working in the church, you probably think you don’t have a vocation for religious life or the priesthood. What if you were told that through your Baptism you were already a king, priest, or prophet?

All Christians, through their Baptism, are called to fulfill the mission of the church, the mission of Christ to announce the Good News. From wherever they are—in religious life or the priesthood, in their families and professions, or as lay ministers—they can respond faithfully to their vocation.

How do I know this is my calling? Many people know because they receive a direct invitation from a parish leader. Prayer is always necessary, as is dialogue and evaluation.

As with every vocation, it is important that someone accompanies you throughout the process and assists in discerning your qualities, talents, and possibilities.

One thing is certain, God will not ask you to give what you are not capable of.

What is required to make a commitment to lay ministry? The recent document of the U.S. bishops, Co-workers in the Vineyard, spells it out:

• Logically, you must be in communion with the church in which you will be serving with fidelity and joy.

• A desire to serve the mission that emerges from the love of God and the people.

• Commitment to a life of prayer and practice of the sacraments.

• The zeal to live a Christian life.

• Emotional maturity.

• A commitment to improve communication skills and resolve conflicts.

As with everything in life, responding to such a vocation requires you to relinquish certain things and options. It is certainly not something one does for money, but in a spirit of service. Are you up to it?

Quizá te atraiga el trabajo dentro de la iglesia, pero no crees tener vocación para la vida religiosa o el sacerdocio. ¡Puedes! Todo cristiano, por el Bautismo, está llamado a cumplir la misión de la Iglesia. Cada uno desde su puesto, que puede ser la vocación a la vida religiosa o el sacerdocio, la vida familiar y profesional o a los ministerios laicos. • Deseo de servir a la misión, que surge del amor a Dios y al pueblo.

• Compromiso con una vida de oración y de práctica de los sacramentos.

• Madurez emocional, que es capacidad de amistad y control de las emociones.

• Dones necesarios para cada ministerio específico.

• Comprometerse a mejorar la capacidad de comunicación.

Naturalmente, para entrar en este tipo de vida, hay que prepararse con un proceso de formación espiritual y académica.

Como toda vocación, exige alguna renuncia. El objetivo no es el dinero sino el servicio. Pero una llamada así de Cristo a seguirle también conlleva la alegría de “encontrar la vida” y de vivir una vida plena. ¿Te animas a considerarlo??

The first meeting of the Saint Athanasius Youth Group (SAYG) will be Wendesday, October 3 at 6:00pm. This will be part of the Generations of Faith Meeting in English and begins with a Potluck Dinner! Each family brings something to share--it can be easy like a $5 pizza from Little Caesars or a package of cookies or a 2Liter of soda. We will be talking about the many exciting activities coming this year. Can't wait to see you there!

Los padres o hermanos que no hablan ingles puedan asistir al programa en el 7 de octubre por la manana a las 11:00 o en el 10 de octubre a las 6:00pm. It's time to start up youth group again!! Our first meeting will be at the Generations of Faith Orientation meeting THIS SUNDAY! You have two meetings to pick from. There is one after the 10:30 English mass or there is one after the 1:30 Spanish Mass.

You AND a parent should come because we will be handing out the schedule and important information about the whole year. If you are hoping to be confirmed this year or next you DEFINITELY want to come to this one.

High School Youth Group Final Meeting!

The SAYG will have its final meeting of the school year on Tuesday, May 22 from 7:00-9:00pm in Room 3.

Last meeting, we had an excellent discussion about the challenges of being a Catholic teen in today's culture followed by a meditation/prayer time. Thank you to all the youth who participated! For our last meeting, we will:

Estimados Padres y Familiares,

Cada año, la Diócesis de San Jose planea un campamento espiritual al Lago de Tahoe e invita a todos los estudiantes de secundaria (high school) a participar. Este año, el Retiro a Tahoe está programado para el 18-22 de Junio, 2007 e invitamos a sus hijos, nietos, primos y sobrinos a pasar una semana con nuevos amigos y cerca a Dios.

El costo del retiro es US$295 (San Atanasio pagará $100 del costo, su costo= $195) e incluye el transporte al campamento, la comida de la semana, el alojamiento en cabina, una camiseta o playera, una foto de todos los participantes y, por supuesto, una experiencia inolvidable. Esperamos una semana llena de alegría, canciones, juegos y misas, con lecturas diseñadas especialmente para que el estudiante aprenda y entienda un poco más el significado de ser joven y Católico. Se necesita entregar los papeles requisitos y el pago a la oficina de Marge Ryan antes del 1 de Abril. Alicia se puede aceptarlos el 27 de marzo, la próxima reunión del Youth Group. El Retiro es un requisito para confirmación en San Atanasio. Hay que asistir uno de los dos años de preparación.

Les cuento una historia. Cuando yo estaba en secundaria, mi profesora de catecismo me contó sobre el Retiro a Tahoe. Me dijo que era una semana que nunca me olvidaría. Hasta hoy, le agradezco a mi profesora por explicar los beneficios del Retiro a Tahoe a mis padres y a mí. Mis padres no comprendían porqué era necesario ir a un campamento por toda una semana. Estaban preocupados y no sabían quienes más asistirían al famoso campamento. Ahora, no puedo imaginar mi vida sin Tahoe y me alegra mucho tener esta oportunidad para invitar a sus estudiantes.

One Week Down and One to Go!!

I hope you have challenged yourself this week by saving the money you would spend on sodas, coffees, and sports drinks to help build a well for a community with no access to clean water. Drinking all that water is good your your health, too!

Next Wednesday we will meet with GOF and all of the families who participated in the Challenge will bring in their savings to drop into the well, so we can build a REAL well!

Thank you to all the students who came to help out at last Saturday's Church Picnic. Aside from the unprovoked water balloon attack by 20 small children, I had a good time, too! The picnic would not have been a success without your service setting up the tents, tables, and chairs, running the games, making annoucnements, and so on. The St. Athanasius Community thanks you!
